As you probably know, today is the first "official" day of spring. Hooray! If you are living in Boise and it is only 43 degrees, this may be a hard fact to swallow. There, Spring is still just a state of mind. Fear not though--I once heard someone say once that "Spring is when you feel like whistling, even with a shoe full of slush."
However, here in CA, I am having a hard time containing my mirth this year. I find myself humming that cheesy "spring song" from Bambi or quoting some saccharin love poem under my breath. Yikes! There are flowers everywhere and the mountains look like they are covered in a fleecy green blanket. To celebrate, the kids and I went to the LA Arboretum. It is free the third Tuesday of every month, and it coincided perfectly with the plant unit Emma is studying in Home School. We had a fabulous time ambling around the grounds. The kid's favorite part was the mini hike we took to a (man made) waterfall. My favorite part, (and this will reveal how truly evil I am) was discovering that all of my children have an extreme aversion to peacocks.
The Arboretum is famous for the peafowl, chickens, geese, and other birds that roam freely through the gardens. There must have been 50 fabulous peacocks throughout the park, and my kids shrieked in terror each time we saw one of them. This, of course, frightened the birds, who fanned out their tails, evoking further paroxysms of panic from my kids. Ahh what says Spring like three children petrified of birds?

Hey, we've had our 60 degree days this year ;0)
Hey Julie De Vil.. sounds like fun!! Peacocks are loud things. We had wild ones on the ranch in Carey and they were worse than roosters for waking you up in the early morning. Spring has sprung here...I can always tell because I never see Krea. He is busy trying to keep farmers happy!!
