Laura Lets Her Hair Down

Did you know that the longest human beard on record belonged to Hans N. Langseth who was born in Norway in 1846? It was 17.5 feet long. That's pretty amazing!

We seem to have opposite problem at our house this week. We are loosing hair at an alarming rate! First Rance decided to experiment with his beard trimmer. (I can't divulge the details or he will KILL me). Then Laura, in a moment of rash curiosity, hacked all the hair off the right side of her head with the sewing scissors. (I don't even want to know how she managed to get them off the highest shelf in the closet.) First, I heard devious giggling coming from the bathroom. When I peered in, my first thought was that there was some kind of mangy rodent immobilized on the floor. Upon further inspection, it turned out to be a large portion of Laura's coif. Poor Laura looked like she was wearing a mullet wig, only it was on sideways. I had to take her to the salon to "even things up a bit." It was Laura's first professional hair cut. But instead of being excited, she bawled through the whole thing. She is very worried that she looks like a boy.

We have all tried to comfort her in different ways. Emma keeps telling her that people look at your clothes, not your hair to decide your gender. Rance regaled us with the story about the time he accidentally shaved his head in Brazil. That reminded me of the time a perm went awry and I looked like an exotic breed of poodle. Then we showed her the Sound of Music and Roman Holiday to prove that short hair can sometimes improve your femininty. Strangely, none of these methods seemed to work. I think Tyler had the best idea. He just gives Laura lots of hugs and kisses. Thank goodness hair is one of the fastest growing parts of our bodies. In the meantime, Laura has taken to wearing hats.

Tell Laura we all have our 'horror hair' stories!! Ask Aunt Marsha about her Freshman haircut. I had many, but the worst was a mullet. I wanted my hair left long and the lady cutting my hair thought I looked better in short hair, so she cut everything short and left a tail in the back...yeah I could have been on Jeff Foxworthy's redneck haircuts!! And I couldn't wear a hat to school. Good luck Laura...this too shall pass!
