Up, up, and Away!

Since we had so much fun exploring Southern California, I have decided to make more of an effort to find and enjoy all the uniquely "Idaho" things there are to do in our great Gem State. I have lived here longer than anywhere else in my life, and I don't think I've done even a fraction of all the neat things there are to do here.

So for starters, our family drove to the Air Force Base in Mountain Home, ID for the Gunfighter Skies Air Show last weekend. We got to crawl through all sorts of planes, watch an impressive air show, and talk to pilots about their experiences flying. I was most impressed by the transport plane that was so enormous 11 elephants, or hundreds of people could fit in its cargo hold. How do they get something as heavy as that puppy off the ground?

Rance, of course, drooled over the fighter planes and that high-tech, remote control plane that is being used in Afghanistan and the Middle East. (I really should let Rance post about this. He can name every kind of air craft and tell you when they were used, what for, etc.) One of the airmen let the kids and I climb inside a tank and check it out too. They aren't nearly as cramped inside as you would think. There was plenty of room to get some r&r, knit, have fondue, or whatever it is they do in there.

The weather was phenomenal this weekend. Even if your interest in planes is nil, it was great to get out and walk in all that pristine air and sunshine. I am starting to feel those spicy/smokey/leafy hints of Autumn in the air, so we are enjoying the outdoors while we can.

The sound produced by these planes is deafening! You can feel the rumble all the way from your head to the tips of your toes.

p.s. This has nothing to do with the Air Show, but I thought it was funny. Today was our Primary Program in church. It was beautifully presented by the kids and was going along without a hitch until one little boy said that, "because of our faith in Jesus Christ we can be baptized and become deformed members of the church." I can only assume he meant to say "confirmed, " but his version was much more tummy tickling.

I had to laugh... knitting and fondue inside a tank. We went to the airshow this summer too and loved it.
